Isopropyl Alcohol is 100% isopropyl alcohol (also known as Isopropanol). It is used as a solvent and a sanitiser in the cleaning industry, but also has many other uses including as an antiseptic and in chemical reaction processes.

Key Benefits:

  • Dissolves certain resins, inks, cosmetics, fats, and oils.
  • Dries very quickly.
  • Removes dirt and fingerprints without smearing or streaking.
  • Sanitises hard surfaces.

How Does It Work?

ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL is a powerful alcohol-solvent that dissolves the resins that are used in adhesive tape glue, cosmetics, and certain types of ink. It also dissolves fats and oils found in fingerprints and smears on glass and stainless steel.

Another very useful property of ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL is its ability when diluted to about 65% with water to kill micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and many viruses by denaturing their proteins and dissolving their lipids (fatty materials). It is however not effective on bacterial spores. This germ-killing power makes ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL an excellent sanitiser for toilet seats, door handles, taps, door touch-plates and other human contact surfaces.

For Use On…

ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL is ideal removing “sticky tape” residues, cosmetic stains, fingerprints and smears and some ink from hard surfaces. It is especially useful for cleaning glass windows and mirrors where it dries rapidly to a sparkling, streak-free finish.

Isopropyl alcohol, commonly known as rubbing alcohol, is a highly effective cleaner for a variety of surfaces, including glass, stainless steel, and electronics. Its ability to dissolve grease, remove sticky residues, and evaporate quickly without leaving streaks makes it a popular choice for cleaning. For disinfecting purposes, a solution of rubbing alcohol and water (typically 2:1 or 1:1) can be sprayed on surfaces and wiped off after one to two minutes. When using it, ensure proper ventilation and wear protective gloves and eyewear for safety.

Common Uses for Isopropyl Alcohol

  • Disinfecting: Combine rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle to create a disinfecting solution for high-touch surfaces like countertops, doorknobs, and appliances.
  • Residue Removal: It effectively removes sticky residues from tape, adhesives, and grease on hard surfaces.
  • Electronics: Ideal for cleaning computer screens, keyboards, and other electronics, isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly, preventing water damage.
  • Streak-Free Cleaning: Use it to clean windows and mirrors for a flawless, streak-free shine.
  • Stain Removal: Effective at removing ink, dirt, and permanent marker stains.
  • Beauty & Personal Care: Great for sanitizing beauty tools and cleaning hands before nail care procedures.

How to Use Isopropyl Alcohol for Cleaning

  • General Cleaning: Simply apply 100% isopropyl alcohol directly to a surface or cloth to wipe away dirt and grime.
  • Disinfecting: For disinfecting, mix 2 parts rubbing alcohol with 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray on surfaces, let it sit for 1-2 minutes, and then wipe dry.
  • Streak-Free Cleaning: Use a microfiber cloth to clean stainless steel and achieve a streak-free shine.

Safety Precautions

  • Ventilation: Always use isopropyl alcohol in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear safety glasses and gloves when handling rubbing alcohol.
  • Flammability: Isopropyl alcohol is highly flammable, so keep it away from open flames and heat sources.

Key Considerations

  • Concentration: Stronger concentrations (such as 70% or 100%) are more effective for disinfection and cleaning, with 100% offering the quickest evaporation rate.
  • Surface Compatibility: While suitable for most hard surfaces, it's always best to test on a small, hidden area before using it on the entire surface.
